Overweight? 58 percent of parents are overweight.

Movement hardly plays a role in every third family, according to a survey by the AOK. Even in terms of overweight, most parents are bad role models – especially the fathers. People getting too fat. Are you too fatCheck your Body Mass Index(BMI).

In Germany, well over half of the parents are overweight or even obese. Overall, 58 percent put too much weight on the balance, as a survey of the AOK shows. For the fathers, even 72 percent are too fat. The result coincides with other studies. In Germany, men are more affected by obesity over all age groups than women.

For the investigation, the Iges Institute had interviewed about 5,000 guardians on behalf of the AOK. According to the experts, people generally tend to underestimate their weight. Therefore, the proportion of fat parents could be even higher.

Parents have a huge impact on the nutritional habits of their children – whether healthy or unhealthy. If they are overweight, the risk for their offspring increases as well. According to the Robert Koch Institute, 21 percent of children between the ages of three and 17 are overweight in Germany.

Only every third family moves sufficiently

One reason for the excess kilos was also provided by the AOK survey. Accordingly, the movement is too short in many families. For every third family, physical activities in leisure time play little or no role. This is especially true for families where the parents are overweight or obese. Only 28 percent of parents even find time for sports and fitness, as the survey in the “Family Study 2018” shows.

The lack of exercise also affects the children. Only ten percent of the children are physically as active as recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), said Jutta Mata of the University of Mannheim, who accompanied the study scientifically. One reason for this is the increasing media consumption. 59 percent of four- to six-year-olds used media for longer than the recommended daily 30 minutes, according to Mata.

  •  Most children find walking barren: bike, scooter, wheel, inline skates or kickboards enrich the variety of movement.
  •  Do not forget the classics: games such as Gummitwist, walking on stilts, catching and hiding, bocce or sack jumping are also possible in backyards.
  •  Children do not brake unnecessarily: Often the little ones use low walls to balance on the way, jump over stones, jump from stairs or wind through posts. Parents should think carefully about which movement games they must forbid their child for safety reasons.
  •  Allow movement indoors: For example, equip the nursery with mattresses or foam elements. Even a small indoor trampoline does not take up much space.

In addition, a good infrastructure can help families become more mobile. For example, the more secure and user-friendly cycle paths there are, the more families undertake joint tours.
